What happens in a NADA ear acupuncture for behavioral health, “Acudetox”, training?
The NADA training is 70 hours. Thirty hours of this is didactic, covered by the three day training plus homework/reading assignments and attendance at one self-help group like AA/NA/ALANON etc. Topics to be covered can be seen at the end of this page.
The remaining 40 hours is really 40 supervised needlings (treating 40 people under supervision). We have 4 times during the three-day training where the trainees invite family/friends to come and be the subjects.
What is the training schedule?
We meet from 9:00-5:00 for three days, and will take breaks and lunch breaks. Please wear comfortable, professional clothing as we will be moving around and providing ear treatments during the training itself. Please wear closed-toed shoes due to the risk of falling needles and avoid low cut blouses. Also, please avoid wearing dangling jewelry and perfume. We will provide all the supplies for the training event.
Upon completion of the training you will become an associate member of the NADA organization. Your application fee/first year membership is included in the training fee. Once you have completed your 40 supervised treatments, you will receive a certificate of training from NADA and will then be an Acudetox Specialist (ADS).
What about hands-on learning?
On the first day you will be needling each other. We will be doing twice daily treatment sessions on days two and three. Please recruit people to come get treatments (family, friends) so that you have ears to practice on. The times for volunteers to come will be 10 am and 2 pm on the second and third day. The more volunteers you recruit, the closer you are to finishing.
Are there any additional things I will need to do?
You will have additional homework assignments to become an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist (ADS) and receive the NADA certificate of training completion: these include reading the NADA manual (which we will provide), attending at least one open 12-step meeting (AA/NA/CA/ALANON/CODA, etc), writing a reflection paper about your experience, and performing 40 supervised treatments.
